Model Green Home
We would like to build a model green house that will display all (or as many as possible) of the different green products, green solutions and green technologies available. This house will serve as a visiting center allowing anyone who would like to see the various green solutions physically displayed to visit as well as an educational center for students who would like to learn about green building systems.
This house will serve as live proof that it is possible to build green and create a 100% self sustained zero energy house. The house will collect, recycle and reuse it’s water both for bathroom usage, but also for growing plants and growing as much of the resident’s food consumption as possible. Solar, wind, geo thermal and storing energy from exercising will provide all of the home’s energy use and ideally generate enough energy to sell back to the grid.
The home will be as energy efficient as possible using passive solar when possible for heating, shading to lower cooling costs, smart lighting control and energy efficient lighting, green roofing, heat reflective coating and all of the interior materials will be made of green materials and/ or recycled product.
Manufacturers who would like to display their green technologies will be invited to participate and provide their products. In addition to the products actually used for building the home, there will be additional products on display shown while touring the home like a museum.
This house will also be the first building using the green way building system panels.
The actual site of the home has already been acquired and is currently in development stages. It is conveniently located near New York City subways and easy to get to by driving North 10 minutes from Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The home’s historic story will be preserved as part of this unique project. The house was originally built in the 1860s by Civil War General Euwen who later became the Treasurer of New York City. It was built on a 30 acre plot which was donated by the general’s family to New York City in the 1960s and the city turned the land into Euwen Park in Riverdale, Bronx.
The house is located inside the park and is adjacent to a 12 foot retaining wall displaying the rock that composes most of New York City and specifically the hills of Riverdale (The Northernmost part of New York City). It is located in a symbolic intersection between the lower neighborhood of Kingsbridge and the higher area in Riverdale. The lot itself is a uniquely shaped triangular corner lot. This meeting point between high and low displaying the geologic character of the land as well as the plant life is a symbolic representation of a meeting point between new and old. This concept will be preserved in building this green display house using cutting edge technologies while restoring the original character of the original house.
Our number one priority is to obtain the necessary financing for this project. The plans have already been submitted to the building department and are pending approval, but additional design will be required in order to finalize all details as well as planning and specification of the various green technologies.
Anyone and/ or any organization that would like to supply product, knowledge, design assistance and/ or financing
The plans have already been submitted to The Bronx DOB. First we need to get them approved. Once they have been approved we will begin construction
There are various successful green homes as well as zero energy homes around the world, but we're not aware of any homes that have been designated purely for displaying green products and educating the public about what's out there.
Working on Building Department approvals
Educate the public as well as professionals about the green product and energy saving options.
